Why BIM is the Right Choice for Airport Infrastructure Design
Considered one of the greatest examples of the use of BIM for infrastructure, London’s Gatwick Airport is coming to the end of a $1.2 billion project to modernize its infrastructure.
Kick-started by the UK BIM Initiative (which has a goal to reduce the cost of government construction projects by 20% and to reduce the UK's carbon intensity in line with its EU carbon commitments), the project team used Autodesk technology to drive efficiencies and success.
Writing for BIM on the Rocks, Autodesk’s Allison Huffman talked to the Bechtel and Gatwick teams behind the project.
One of the biggest challenges they faced was finding a way to increase collaboration across the thousands of contractors involved while meeting deadlines and without disruption to the 34 million people who pass through the airport each year. Using Autodesk BIM Solutions for Infrastructure the team was able to migrate to BIM and leverage a common language for efficient collaboration across more than 250 individual projects.
