LA Earth uses Google Earth Enterprise

Emergency preparedness is often times something most residents don’t think about until they’re face to face with a disaster. By then it could be too late. Louisiana is doing their part to stop this trend and help residents with emergency preparedness. The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) have released the first public version of Google Earth Enterprise. This new software, called Louisiana Earth, will assist the citizens of Louisiana in emergency planning. Released as part of the state's "Get a Game Plan" campaign, Louisiana Earth uses Google Earth Enterprise to assist citizens in creating evacuation plans. LA Earth provides access to all of the states evacuation routes, sheltering points, historical hazard data and other information that is essential during an evacuation such as locations of and available occupancy of hotels, gas stations, pharmacies, grocery stores, veterinary clinics and banks. LA Earth is similar in concept to a project launched in October 2005 by the Alabama Department of Homeland Security (AL DHS), Virtual Alabama. Also built on Google Earth Enterprise, Virtual Alabama, explained in this three minute video, takes advantage hi resolution satellite imagery and geospatial data to allow collaboration across many of Alabama’s agencies including first responders and environmental agencies. More than just emergency response, GOHSEP is using LA Earth to inform citizens of many activities and events, such as festivals, that are available in Louisiana.
