At JFK Airport, Using 3-D Modeling to Develop Solutions
Working around the 45 million passengers and sheer scale of operations at New York’s JFK airport is no mean feat. But using BIM, Skanska USA Building (a building and civil construction company) were able to successfully navigate this complex environment while handling the foundation work for JFK’s Checked Baggage Inspection System project. With BIM, the company was able to provide 21% savings on the original design cost, shortened the schedule by three weeks, and created a safe work environment. Read more about how they did it and the benefits that BIM brought to the project on the Skanska blog.

Oklahoma Tornadoes Underscore Importance of GIS in Disaster Recovery Efforts
This is a topic we cover often here on Acronym – the critical role that GIS can have in aiding in natural disaster response and recovery efforts. This summer’s tornadoes in Oklahoma served to underscore this imperative – “Location is the key factor in the recovery process,” said Dr. Stephen McElroy, GIS program chair for American Sentinel University. “In times of tremendous need, GIS analysts can play a critical role in matching relief supplies and donations to the precise areas that are most affected,” he continued. Read more on Geospatial PR, about how GIS systems, often as simple as geo-tagged Tweets can help first responders to identify areas in which people need help.
