Static defenses, remote work and browser-based workflows are combining to expose federal agencies to a new generation of ransomware attacks that are delivered by Highly Evasive Adaptive Threats (HEAT). HEAT attacks are designed to circumvent predictable defensive measures, including antivirus, endpoint detection and response (EDR), Secure Web Gateways (SWG) and sandboxes. Rather than send conventional phishing email messages, for example, HEAT attacks send victims malicious links via social media and professional web networks, collaboration applications, SMS, shared documents, shared folders, and more. HEAT attacks have not only led to ransomware attacks, but to data theft, stealth monitoring and account takeovers.
